Chasing The Blues

Blue cocktails, we love them. There are so many variations - super sour to sickly sweet - to choose from. And don't forget tongue and teeth tattooing, though not all combinations leave a mark. So let's give this hue a toast.

Blue Bazooki
1 1/2 oz Mandarin-flavored vodka
1 1/2 oz Blue Curacao
splash orange juice
4 oz Perrier sparkling natural mineral water

In a cocktail shaker partially filled with Perrier ice, combine vodka, blue curacao and a good splash of orange juice; set aside. Dip edge of wide-mouth glass, such a s a martini or daiquiri glass in water or orange juice; then dip in plate covered with sugar. Add Perrier to glass, shake contents of cocktail shaker well. Using a cocktail strainer, pour mixture into sugar edged glass..

Created by John, Hugo's Frog Bar and Fish House, Chicago, Illinois USA for Perrier
John likes to "serve up a little bit of the unexpected." He has noted that the most frequently ordered drinks share one common denominator - vodka. The three most popular at this time were Cosmopolitan, vodka tonic and vodka cranberry.

Blue Blazer 1940
2 1/2 oz rye or bourbon whiskey
2 1/2 oz boiling water
1 tsp powdered sugar
lemon peel

Use two large silver-plated mugs, with handles. Put the whiskey in one mug, and the boiling water into the other, ignite the whiskey and, while blazing, mix both ingredients by pouring them from one mug to the other. If well done, this will have the appearance of a continued stream of liquid fire. Sweeten with sugar and serve with a piece of lemon peel. Serve in a four-ounce stemmed mug.

From the bookOld Mr. Boston DeLuxe Official Bartender's Guide, compiled and edited by Leo Cotton (Ben Burke, Inc., 1941).
